F. MALCOLM CUNNINGHAM, SR. BAR ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR A FAIR AND IMPARTIAL INVESTIGATION FOR THE RECENT DEATH OF COREY JONES

West Palm Beach, FL. (October 21, 2015) – The members of the F. Malcolm Cunningham, Sr. Bar Association (FMCBA) are deeply saddened by the police killing of Boynton Beach resident Corey Jones. This killing raises justified questions as to the use of force in this instance. It is vital for public confidence, in light of heightened awareness across the Country of police shootings, that process be transparent and impartial.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has been charged with investigating the death of Mr. Jones. We are aware that State Attorney Dave Aronberg has already made a statement that he is conducting an independent investigation, that he is sharing information with Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and that he is meeting with the family. Governor Scott has offered the assistance of FDLE. However, to ensure the public’s confidence in the investigation and resultant findings, FMCBA calls for a parallel fair and impartial investigation of the recent death of Corey Jones by Florida Department of Law Enforcement or the United States Department of Justice. We also insist that there be full transparency during the investigation, that facts be released quickly, and that the police agencies and Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office cooperate fully with Mr. Jones’ family and their attorney. We insist, that should the independent investigation reveal wrongdoing on the part of Officer Raja, that State Attorney Dave Aronberg pursue justice to the fullest extent of his authority.

FMCBA will also be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Friday, October 23, 2015, 6PM at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 801 8th Street, WPB, FL 33401 for the community to voice their concerns, brainstorm ideas to foster more positive community-police relations, and formulate a plan of action to deal with this issue that is affecting our community.
